Want Extra Income? 3 Simple Ways to Start a Side Hustle

Want to earn extra income but unsure where to begin?

Start by looking at what you already know, what you can do and what people around you need.

Your first step could be selling a skill, offering a service or selling a product. You don’t have to try all three. Choose one idea and give yourself a small, practical way to test it.

    1. Sell a skill: use what you know

A skill is something you know how to do that could be useful to someone else.

You might be good at writing, designing, teaching or organising information. Think about the things people already ask you to help with.

    For example, you could:

    • Design simple social media graphics.
    • Write product descriptions for a small business.
    • Teach a subject you understand well.
    • Help someone prepare a presentation.

    Make your offer specific.

“I can help with design” is broad. “I can create three social media graphics for your weekly promotion” gives a potential customer something clear to consider.

Start with work you can confidently deliver, and agree on what is included before you begin.

    2. Offer a service: help with a task

A service is a task you complete for someone. It can use a specialist skill or involve practical help with everyday work.

    Examples include:

    • Organising a workspace.
    • Cleaning a home or office.
    • Helping with basic business administration.
    • Packing orders for a small business.
    • Repairing items you are qualified and equipped to fix.

Ask yourself: What task can I do well that someone else needs help with?

Then decide what you will provide, how long it will take and what you will charge. Include preparation, travel and communication time when planning your workload.

Skills and services often overlap. The important part is making your offer easy to understand.

    3. Sell a product: make it, source it or resell it

If you enjoy working with physical products, you could make something yourself, source it from a supplier or resell an existing item.

Possible starting points include handmade gifts, customised stationery or useful products for a particular customer group.

    Before buying stock, ask:

    • Who is this product for?
    • What need does it meet?
    • What are customers buying now?
    • How will I reach those customers?
    • What will it cost to buy, prepare and deliver?

Start with a sample or small test where possible.

For sourced products, check the supplier, product quality, minimum order quantity and delivery terms. Include shipping, packaging and selling fees when working out your costs.

A low buying price alone does not tell you whether a product will be worthwhile.

    Choose one idea to test

You don’t need to launch a large range or offer every service you can think of.

Choose an idea that fits your current skills, available time and spending limit. Speak to a few potential customers and ask what they need, what they currently use and what frustrates them.

    Then create one clear offer.

    For example:

“I help local cafes promote their weekly specials by creating three social media graphics.”

A small paid trial or order can help you learn whether people will buy your offer. Record feedback as well as sales so you can decide what to improve.

Know your costs before setting a price

Money coming in is not the same as profit.

Consider materials, stock, delivery, selling fees, tools and other expenses. Your time matters too.

    After your first test, review:

    • How much money did I receive?
    • What did I spend?
    • How many hours did I work?
    • What would I change next time?

Check any rules or permissions that apply to your activity before you start selling.
